#1  A spy thriller by Trevanian called Shibumi(1979) dealt with a secret Japanese project for energy independence through building a robot to harvest deep sea methane hydrates... A shadowy conspiracy of Big Oil was out to stop it. Amusing when Real Life starts to live out fiction I read in the 80's.
