Haftar accuses Belgium of ‘funding terrorism’
2018-11-28
[Libya Observer] The spokesperson of warlord Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, who controls the eastern part of the country, has accused Belgium of sending weapons to "terrorist groups" in western Libya via Misrata airport.

Ahmed al-Mismari claimed in his latest presser last week that Belgium used the interest and dividends of Libyan frozen assets to send weapons to "Al-Qaeda and Moslem Brüderbund."

Al-Mismari, a former folk poet, threatened to send his claim to the judiciary saying "this case has no statute of limitations." He also hinted at the measures that could be taken to "punish" Belgium including severing political and economic ties.

"We have all documents to prove this; the perpetrator has to be ready to stand trial," the mouthpiece said, accusing Chairman of UN-backed Presidential Council Fayez Sarraj of failure to deal with the file of Libyan frozen assets in Belgium properly.

Warlord Khalifa Haftar and his backers accuse political opponents of being affiliates to ISIS, al-Qaeda and Moslem Brüderbund.

Earlier, Belgian media reported that billions of Libyan frozen funds had disappeared from four Libyan accounts to fund militias in Libya.
