New Study Provides Further Evidence that Marijuana Is a Gateway Drug
2018-12-01
[PJ] A new study looking at alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use among adolescents gives some interesting and helpful conclusions. Well, helpful conclusions if people will be willing to remove their cultural blinders concerning marijuana. Since the politically and culturally popular thing to do is to extol the virtues of the recreational use of marijuana, the study's sharp gateway-drug implications will most likely be a warning that is derided and unheeded.

Frankly, I don't really care if people smoke weed or not. To be clear, if asked, I'll warn against it. What bugs me, though, is that many who do choose to smoke weed deceive themselves (and others) about marijuana's potential for harm.

When I worked in a substance awareness program targeting eighth-graders, my co-workers and I could predict the pushback we would receive from the students: marijuana isn't addictive... marijuana doesn't cause any real, long-term, negative effects, blah, blah, blah.

While it's true that marijuana doesn't bring the same negative effects as, say, methamphetamine, it's not true that marijuana is completely devoid of any negative effects. For starters, it is addictive. Substances don't have to be physically addictive to be addictive. As my colleagues and I would tell the protesting students, shopping can be addictive.

A negative effect that comes from ingesting marijuana that many users (and non-users) scoff at is the drug's potential to be a gateway drug. However, the study linked to above concludes, "The implications of the more prominent role of marijuana in the early stages of drug use sequences are important to continue tracking."

#13  I can't drink coffee when it's too hot outside. Don't want caffeine for the sake of caffeine. Those who have to have a jay to get through the day are probably a problem for me if I have to interact with them. Don't want them working on my car, airplane or motorcycle. Don't want them in my hospital room.

#12  "use among adolescents" ... which is still illegal.

#11   I believe freedom means you are allowed to wreck yourself.

Well, there is that. And, if it feels good, the users wants to keep on feeling good. That's not necessarily an addiction as in you get physically ill if you can't get it.

But, if nothing else, you could call marijuana a gateway drug because it puts users in an environment where hard narcotics are much more readily available and the normal stigmas to the hard narcotics are missing.

Securing the border would help. Then closely inspect all packages that arrive in the mail from China.

#10  I think users should be off public property until the drug wears off.

If the user has life long effects they stay at the place they took it...

#9  I believe freedom means you are allowed to wreck yourself. It's just not up to the rest of us to pick up the pieces. Yes, that means lock addicts up. I'm good with that.

#8  For others, that is the only drug they use.

Most people, most of the time, can use without developing an addiction, moving on to harder drugs, or triggering schizophrenia. The problem is the 10% or so who find out they are succeptible to life-destroying problems when they try the stuff.

Ten percent of 350 million Americans is an awful lot of addicts and psychotics. Reduce to one quarter because plenty of people like me won’t ever touch the stuff — that’s still an awful lot of newly damaged and dangerous people wandering the streets.

#7  You realize, if we institute p*ss tests for voting, California and Colorado are shut out. Probably the rest of the left coast too.

#6  # 4 anything and everything can and should be considered. It is a narrow path we tread in this life.

#4  Marijuana a gateway drug? It can be for some. For others, that is the only drug they use. Few people speak of alcohol as a gateway drug.

#3  The elite are in on this. Or the elite want to be. Many political connections. This is a big money grab. Similar to Solar power or Wind energy. The fix is in. Similar to if Medicare pays for housing. The ones inside pass this on and all benefit handsomely. Willful "cultural blinders". Media; guess what, lies again.

Thanks, B...
