Egypt's runaway population growth: Stemming the tide
2018-12-02 | |
Amr Hassan, secretary-general of the National Population Council, said that between 2000 and 2008 birth control campaigns had succeeded in reducing population growth from two million to 1.5 million annually. According to Hassan, “the collapse of birth control campaigns after 2008 was caused by clerics launching a counter-campaign.” “They told citizens that birth control was a Zionist conspiracy against Islam and Muslims,” said Hassan. Meanwhile, the Health Affairs Committee approved on Sunday a grant agreement between Egypt and the US to help fund birth control programmes. Under the agreement Egypt will receive a US government grant of at $11 million to support and build on existing birth control programmes. The money will be used to make birth control measures more appealing to families, provide training for staff engaged in family planning at health units, and to help fund a demographic survey to collect reliable data on population and health.
