Mr Putin rallied his support behind Theresa May saying she must "fulfil the will of the people", saying he understands the Prime Minister’s position in "fighting for this Brexit". Speaking during his annual press conference, he said: "The referendum was held. "What can she do? She has to fulfil the will of the people expressed in the referendum." "Was it not a referendum? "Someone disliked the result, so repeat it over and over? Is this democracy? "What then would be the point of the referendum in the first place?" Mr Putin also accused the UK and US political classes of "disrespecting" the public by questioning the Brexit vote and Donald Trump's election. He said: "They don't want to recognise Mr Trump's victory. That's disrespect of voters. |
