| Der Spiegel star reporter Claas Relotius fabricated stories for years |

| [NYPOST] The German weekly Der Spiegel, one of the top-selling publications in Europe, is reeling from a scandal that revealed that a star news hound has reportedly faked stories for years. Many of the faked stories written by Claas Relotius were centered in the United States or in the Middle East. So far, Der Spiegel editors said Wednesday, they had found that Relotius "made up stories and invented protagonists" in at least 14 of the 60 stories examined so far. But they said the investigation is only beginning. The editors said they were "astounded and sad" by the discovery, which they called "a low point in Der Spiegel’s 70-year history." | #10 Since I don't often read Der Spiegel, I didn't even know his name. The Spiegel (leftist) has an annoying habit of embellishing stories, which always had me suspicious. They have been doing this for decades. The stories of Relotius fit the "narrative", that's why he got so many trophys. Now everyone is shocked like Capitaine Renaud. But he's hardly the only offender. I'll stick to FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung,) and NZZ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung), both conservative/classical liberal. If you skip politics, the weekly Die Zeit has some good stories, too. The SZ (Süddeutsche) is moderately left, but still readable. Die Welt (conservative) is surprisingly good, too, given the fact that it comes from the same publisher who publishes BILD (biggest tabloid). |
