AT&T Scamming Customers Who Don't Sign Up for Autopay
2019-04-26
No someone isn't scamming AT&T. AT&T are the roaches in this pudding.
So AT&T took over the billing for Directv a few months ago and I already paid one late charge before I figured out what was going on. They really want you to give them a credit card or bank account so they can avoid all that messy paper and postage (and incidentally take whatever they want whenever they want).

Here's the gimmick (using today's bill):

4/26/19 - Received bill
4/13/19 - Official Bill "Issue" date
5/06/19 - Bill due date

But the bill return slip has a barely legible quibble that says the payment may take 7 days to post.

Bottom line: you've got three days to get the check to them if you want to be sure to avoid late charges.

Their response will be "But we sent you an email a week ago, you could have paid on-line and avoided all this unpleasantness."

Like I would trust them with my credit card or bank account after this cr*p.

#3  When I first had to get AT&T 10 years ago, they are the only provider in my area, I signed up for autopay. I noticed my bank statement didn't add up right with my check register. Turns out AT&T took 3 months worth at once. I canceled autopay right then.

#2  Been with AT&T for cell phone service since '83. They play so many shenanigans and it's easy to see it will only get worse. They went heavily in debt to buy DirecTV and Time Warner and now those two are bleeding subscribers like crazy. I can see a day very soon now where AT&T will try to force all their cell customers to buy cable content too just to keep the cell service. I will be an ex customer of theirs at that point.

#1  I've noticed the shrinkage of the pay window lately for a lot of accounts - to about 10 days between receipt of bill and due date - but have not yet been bitten by the '7 days to post' varmint.
