#4  You would have to ban travel from the surrounding 'stans and Iran as well to keep them isolated. Pakistan would be funding half the factions, Iran another half, the Saudis a third half, and the McCain family a fourth half.

#3  If the west can insulate itself and protect their borders, isolating these countries with a complete travel ban and trade sanctions, yes. Also, keep their good intentions focused on domestic issues and strengthening executive control.

Let 'em all fester. It would be so much better to carpet bomb a place later, knowing that there's no one down there worth saving.

#2  Imagine an Afgh with Iran occupied, ISIS dominated, Taliban dominated, Al Q dominated and isolated Kabul. The various factions would be in continual conflict.

The population would suffer but it would be a winner for the west.
