Sudan military acknowledges violations in sit-in dispersal
2019-06-15
[DAWN] Sudan's ruling military has acknowledged that security forces committed violations when they moved in to disperse a protest sit-in camp outside the military headquarters in Khartoum last week.
"Our bad"
The front man of the ruling military council, Gen Shams Eddin Kabashi, told news hounds at a news conference late Thursday that an investigation was underway and that several military officers were held in jug for alleged "deviation" from the action plan set by military leaders.
"They were put on paid leave and R&R"
Kabashi did not elaborate on the violations beyond describing them as "painful and outrageous".

Over 100 people were killed in the capital and across Sudan in a sweeping crackdown last week, according to protest organisers. Protesters also said more than 40 bodies were pulled from the Nile River in Khartoum and taken away by security forces.

"We feel sorry for what happened," said Kabashi. "We will show no leniency and we will hold accountable anyone, regardless of their rank, if proven to have committed violations."

#1  General Shams Eddin Kabashi, then a major, led a military contingent south of Khartoum that ensured the overthrow of the civilian Sadiq al-Mahdi government in July 1989. Subsequently, he was known as one of the most brutal supporters of the government of General Bashir. Quite simply, he is never to be trusted.
