The West Coast is running out of space to put dead whales
2019-06-22
[NYPOST] So many gray whales are washing up on the U.S. West Coast that the federal agency that deals with the rotting carcasses is running out of places to put them while they decompose.

NOAA Fisheries is asking those with private, isolated beachfront property to "host" a rotting whale because space is running out on public land.

So far, about 160 gray whales have washed up this year from Mexico to Canada.

Eighty-one of those died between Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, and Alaska.

U.S. scientists last month declared the die-off an "unusual mortality event," a designation that triggers additional resources and launches an investigation into possible causes.

The first couple to volunteer their private beach received the carcass of an adult male gray whale that died of starvation.

#6  Perfectly normal phenomenon. It's only guilt and systemic self-criticism in the new way of dealing with reality that we are now being made to perceive it as some major event.

"Stranding" is a phenomenon that can occur for any of several reasons, including natural death to rough weather to reaction to sonar frequencies. The huge number quoted is obviously an aggregate, not that hundreds of whales are suiciding for some reason. Now they'll investigate the "unusual mortality event" and link it to global warming somehow.

#4  What was wrong with the ocean itself again?

Even though whales have been dying in the ocean ever since they wriggled back into the water, the ocean lacks the proper regulatory infrastructure - EPA bureaucrats, regulators, inspectors, PowerPoint slides and civil service jobs. Hell, there's not even a home owner's association. You can't just let animals go around dying where ever they feel like.

#1  I've heard that there are lots of empty ocean bottoms nearby with organic recycling centers already staffed and waiting. What's wrong with them?
