#5  I forgot to add the "sarc" tag. Poppy seeds are also grown in California and yes it is legal to grow poppies, what's illegal is the harvesting of poppy sap.

Because it’s a steady income for the Taliban, who guard the producer for a cut of the profits. They wouldn’t be needed to guard pistachio orchards or saffron fields. Also, Afghanistan has an excess of uneducated peasants to harvest the poppies, many already opium addicts, so that isn’t an issue.
