Sea-Watch captain arrested as ship docks at Lampedusa
2019-06-30
[DW] Italian police arrested the German captain of a migrant rescue ship after she docked at the port of Lampedusa. Sea-Watch told DW Italia is the safest option and bringing migrants colonists to Germany is risky and time consuming.

Sea-Watch told DW that its boats are unable to bring migrants colonists to Germany or the Netherlands because both countries are too far away from the search and rescue (SAR) zone off Libya, and this could allow for lives to be lost in the SAR while they were making the 5-week journey there and back.
Sea-Watch 3 entered the Italian port of Lampedusa without authorization early Saturday following a two-week standoff between the charity ship's captain and Italian authorities.

German captain Carola Rackete was arrested as the boat docked with 40 migrants colonists remaining on board, front man Ruben Neugebauer told Agence La Belle France-Presse. Television footage showed a heavy security presence at the port and police escorting 31-year-old Rackete off the vessel.

#8  Certainly not her legal defense fund. I hope she spends a good long time in an Italian prison.

#7  Abu, I assume you mean the costs of prosecuting her, not her legal defense fund.

#6  Scuttle the ship

Well, remove the diesel first. But, yes, sunken ships are good for the environment because they're like little reefs underwater and all kinds or marine life grows there. That's aside from the fact that ships are expensive and it'd be a big loss for DW.

Could also auction it and use the proceeds for legal costs associated with the captain's trial and deportation of the colonists.

#5  The interior minister Matteo Salvini, who also contested for the EU, is far-right. He's very anti-immigration, and has constant feuds with the libtard judiciary. There is a change toward nationalist, conservative policies above the usual EU diversity shit in Italy right now.

#4  I think the rules of the game have just changed. If the captain get serious jail time the Italian police are to be thanked.
