#2  Most people everywhere are insular. There may be a superficial gloss, especially in small countries which need to be keenly aware of the nearest bigger/big country, eg almost every country in Europe, and certainly the educated classes make a point of being able to quote the opinions of their local news source of record and their own vacation experiences, but that is not the same as actually trying to understand the historical development and current interactions that result in the current global situation.

But to be fair, very often I am unaware of my local issues and concerns. There is only so much time and energy to devote to questions beyond the immediately personal and familial.

#1  It is tempting therefore to put the blame for the insular world-view of the current crop of American politicians on voters. The increasing polarization of public opinion along facile left-right lines probably does not make it any easier for the average American to unpack complicated global issues.

I blame the one-note media, for barely bothering to provide an alternative point of view, much less provide any background on complex global issues.

Come to think of it, maybe it's the Sound-Bite Generation.
