Portland Mayor Issues Mealy-mouthed Statement
2019-07-03
[DAILYWIRE] Amid the mounting blowback over the alarming display of violence in his city, Mayor Wheeler issued a vague statement Monday criticizing those who "used their opportunity to exercise their 1st amendment rights, as an opportunity to incite violence."

"Portland has always been a beacon of free speech. We are proud of that history," he wrote in the first of the tweet thread. "But in the last couple of years, some have increasingly used their opportunity to exercise their 1st amendment rights, as an opportunity to incite violence. Over the weekend some chose to engage in violence in Portland, which is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We stand against all forms of violence — regardless of someone’s political leanings."

He then attempted to address why the violence was allowed to erupt with what appeared to be minimal police response.

"Portland police officers have the unenviable task of keeping the peace," wrote Wheeler. "It’s a difficult job and hard decisions are made in real-time. While we continue to learn more about what transpired over the weekend, we will keep you informed."

Wheeler concluded by assuring the public that the city would hold the violent criminals accountable. "We will do everything we can to make sure that those who have committed violence are held accountable," he wrote.

As documented by Twitchy, many of the responses online expressed skepticism about the mayor's ability or willingness to provide citizens who don't embrace the radical left agenda proper police protection.

Thank you, Rex Mundi, I’d forgotten about that little bit of excitement. So they never reared up on their hind legs again after that? Good to know.

#9  TW - links in comment #7 tell the story. Since then, Berkeley has been quiet. Portland Antifa are the most violent group yet. It's going to be a messy affair, but one that must be seen through

#8  There was an article about Ted "Three" Wheeler the other day that, as an aside, claimed the police have no constitutional requirement to protect you. If true, the putz may continue his brownshirt maneuvers. I suspect if 1000 patriots show up on HIS streets the cops will be busting butts and heads like you wouldn't believe.

What happened in Berkeley, Rex Mundi?

#5  Fool. His job - his first responsibility - is to preserve order in Portland. To do that, he and his law enforcement officers are granted a monopoly on violence in Portland. He is obligated by law to exercise that monopoly in order to prevent violent crimes and to detain violent criminals in Portland.

If there is any evidence that the Mayor told law enforcement to stand down in the face of easily-predicted, credible threats of violence, then he and the City of Portland government are criminally liable.

From what I saw this was a little more kinetic than incitement. Or is my mother's old saying about "...words can never hurt you." just a lot of bilge?

#3  Crazy Fool - the parade is scheduled for Aug 17. It's billed as the Rally to End Antifa. The goal is to turn out 1000 patriots. As I've been warning for the past year, Portland will need to be subdued as Berkeley was. That time has come. Antifa, the DSA, and the skinhead groups SHARP and RASH will have two choices, turn out and get crushed, or don't show and forever be discredited in the eyes of their rank and file.

#2  His words belie his loyalties. Every statement is ambivalent and the narrative tends to lean to the notional premise that that 'they were only exercising their 1st Amendment right, but some carried it a bit too far.'

The same fucking thing can be said about terrorist acts. Bastard.

#1  So, when will the parade be scheduled to honor those `courageous` masked heros of antifa?
(Yeah, better have a /sarcasm tag here...)
