Home Depot shoppers threaten to boycott after learning the co-founder gave millions to help elect Trump
2019-07-09
[Market Watch] Helping to make America great again has become this retired Home Depot co-founder’s own DIY project.

Billionaire Bernie Marcus recently made headlines by sharing that he plans to give 80% to 90% of his wealth (estimated at $4.53 billion by Bloomberg, or $5.8 billion by Forbes) to charity when he dies. But the former Home Depot HD, +0.69% chairman also revealed in the same Atlanta Journal-Constitution interview that he will be donating to Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, as well. Indeed, he donated $7 million to help elect Trump in 2016, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Related: Home Depot co-founder will give 90% of his reported $4.5 billion fortune to charity

And now some enraged customers on social media say they are boycotting the home-improvement chain’s stores, which does about $108 billion in annual sales. They claim to be cutting up their Home Depot cards, and say they plan to shop at competitors like Lowe’s LOW, +0.42% and Menards, under the hashtag #BoycottHomeDepot. They have also responded to unrelated posts on Home Depot’s official Twitter TWTR, +0.55% account with comments like "just say no to Home Depot" and "I will rot in the bowels of hell before I give one penny to @HomeDepot again."

#18  Sorry. I bought the family cabin of governor Arne Carlson's secretary's family's. The building is a wall of handmade pine 6 pane windows on Coon Lake. While it's a heart breaking shame to see them, go winters here can get a bit biting.

All sky lighted knotty pine from floor to ceiling. God bless lake cabin life. It rebuilds the spirit like nothing else.

#16  If that means they will aslo keep their God-forsaken dogs from shopping there also I am all for that. Dogs belong at home and NOT AT THE FUCKING STORES!!!!!!!! (except for legitimate Service animals and not the snowflake protecting 'Emotional support purse pooches, often carried by both flake-genders)

#14  Imagine a Venn Diagram of Snowflakes and homeowners. Not much overlap. Now look at a diagram of Home Depot customers and homeowners. Almost identical. Empty threat. A Venn Diagram of Homeowners and Trump voters would also show yuge overlap. Funny how that works.

#13  Heck, Woodrow was just talking about the regular small windows. The 12 big custom jobs had to be special ordered. :)

#11  Um Woodrow? If you need 18 windows that place doesn't qualify as a cabin unless your real name is Rothschild or Buffet or Salman. Wink, Wink.

#10  Don't think so. We were at the Forest Lake store and bought a new AC system and 18 windows for our cabin yesterday. Our sales gal was pretty excited over the stock rising.

They claim to be cutting up their Home Depot cards

What doesn't get these snowflakes melting?

#8  The non-profit Georgia Aquarium, yes the one Bernie Marcus built and visited by thousands of people each month.

#7  Same for the tornado taking off your shingles and how you will put your whole house at risk rather than buy some heavy tarps to cover it until you can employ some roofers.

#6  At 8 at night on a Saturday night when your sump pump fails and it's raining like hell remind me about how you will honor your boycott instead of replacing the pump and saving everything in your basement!!!

#5  I participated in the Chick-fil-A counter-boycott a few years back. Parking anywhere close to the building was a no-go. Stood in line for nearly 15 minutes to place my order.

#4  Should each of the individual customers receive the Oberlin treatment ? Anyway, here's the big man with Marvin Ellison, now CEO of Lowe's LOW. So much for shopping elsewhere, idiots.

I feel the same way about the Boston Globe, Apple, and coming very, very close with Microsoft, who I used to be a huge fan of. The recent forced upgrade to Windows 10 sealed it for me.

#2  The people that buy shit at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. tend to have jobs - this is a bullshit 'threat'.
