Houston Ship Channel shut down after 11 Greenpeace activists dangled off bridge ahead of 3rd Dem debate
2019-09-13
[KXAN] Twenty-two Greenpeace USA activists created a blockade on the Fred Hartman Bridge in Baytown, Texas early Thursday ahead of the third Democratic primary debate in Houston.

Eleven of those climbers are dangling over the side of the bridge, an activist said in a Facebook Live video. The climbers held colorful ribbons and streamers to block traffic under the bridge.
"Look! Pinatas!"
The group aims to "shut down the largest oil export channel in the U.S." for 24 hours.

Law enforcement officials told the local NBC affiliate that Houston Ship Channel was temporarily closed down because the protesters threatened to lower themselves to stop ship traffic.

"This climate emergency was fueled by Trump’s climate denial and the oil industry’s greed," the group wrote in the Facebook posts. "We’re here to resist."

Harris County constables are on the bridge monitoring the scene. Law enforcement officials told local media that the protesters were peaceful so far. At least two lanes of the bridge were also blocked to traffic and they are expected to remain blocked until the protest is over.

#7  Arrest them all for interfering with a part of the critical infrastructure (energy/oil) and send Greenpeace the bill.

#6  They should have tried to block the road instead. Then their remains could have been tossed off the bridge. I'll bet they don't try this again, because Houston traffic jams aren't known for mercy and tolerance to the people deliberately causing them.

#5  dangling over the side of the bridge

One has to assume all the sharp knives in Houston were confiscated ahead of the debate... only the ones on-stage were allowed.

#4  Cut them down and let them fall into the water and you will end this bullshit.

#2  The police should merely advise drivers theirs some danglers and let them decide if it's their car they want to suicide on.
