WHO admits error. Upgrades Warning on Wuhan CoronaVirus
2020-01-29
[ScienceAlert] The World Health Organization, which has sometimes been criticised for its handling of past disease outbreaks, admitted an error on Monday in its risk assessment of China's deadly virus.

The Geneva-based UN agency said in a situation report late Sunday that the risk was "very high in China, high at the regional level and high at the global level."

In a footnote, the WHO explained that it had stated "incorrectly" in its previous reports on Thursday, Friday and Saturday that the global risk was "moderate".

The correction of the global risk assessment does not mean that an international health emergency has been declared.

#7  To be fair, they were asked while the Primo was being served; still have secondo e contorno, insalata, the formaggi e frutta, dolce, and the all important digestivo.

#5  242 cases have run their course: 132 fatalities and only 110 recoveries. The rest of the infected are still in the pipeline, so to speak.

#4  gestation period for this virus is not fully known - it is suspected to be days to weeks

we do not yet know if or how the virus can spread during the non symptom period

we do not yet know the extent that treating the symptoms will save patients lives

we do not yet know if any other the existing anti viral agents are effective in treatment

as long as the Chinese are in charge of this our ability to understand this is limited

#2  So, going back to stone ages because, maybe - just maybe - CO2 causes global warming, is OK. But with an epidemic that can kill millions we have to be super duper sure.

#1  The problem with waiting until you are sure is that when you are sure, you realize you shouldn't have waited.
