| #14 I think part of the impeachment strategy (no, strategy implies rational thought -- let's go with the impeachment feelz) was to provoke Trump into a misplaced reaction. Trump can kill that, and maybe seal the deal for November, by using the SOTU in a statesman-like and concilatory fashion: "I invite all members of Congress to work with me in making America even greater than it is now." (Whether he has to mean it or not is a different question -- this is optics.) Publicly threatening Dire Revenge is the wrong move. |

| #1 ...They're relying on the fact that most Americans don't have any real understanding of How Things Work. The House may well be able to define an impeachable offense as anything they want (and I subscribe to that, by the way) but the Senate then gets to define the trial in any way that they want, and there's not a damn thing the House can do about it. An impeachment is an accusation and a charge. No more, no less. A prosecutor can, as the saying goes, indict a ham sandwich, but he can't make the jurors convict - and if they don't, then it makes no difference what you charged him with. Mike |
