Coronavirus shutdowns have unintended climate benefits: cleaner air, clearer water |
2020-03-22 |
Countries that have been under stringent lockdowns to stop the spread of the coronavirus have experienced an unintended benefit. The outbreak has, at least in part, contributed to a noticeable drop in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in some countries. Although grim, it's something scientists said could offer tough lessons for how to prepare ‐ and ideally avoid ‐ the most destructive impacts of climate change. |

#13 Earth must not notice us much if this little bit of inactivity in such a short time can make it all pristine again. |

#9 Yes, the mayor of Venice said the sediment is nasty and it's just waiting to be stirred up again. Italy obviously has much bigger problems, but the tech used to move sand off shipwrecks in treasure salvor operations could probably get a lot of it up for proper disposal while there's no traffic in the canals. Won't happen, but probably could be done. |

#7 Don't tell those climate scientist that it only takes a few weeks for the planet to begin "healing" itself. They need their grant money. |

#4 When the time is right, having interesting fish flourishing in the canals would probably be a great advertising point to help revitalize tourism. I've never personally seen a single fish in a Venice video, so that would be new. |

#2 Thunberg's legions are 'striking' from home, unheeded and ZFGed by the world. Also, it's no fun playing hooky when the school asks you not to come. |
