US halts test of Trump-touted hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 patients
2020-06-21
[Jpost] The US National Institutes of Health said on Saturday it has halted a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
As I understand it, the evidence thus far strongly suggests it’s best used in the early stages to prevent the disease from progressing to the point where hospitalization is needed.
The study found that hydroxychloroquine, which President Donald Trump
...the Nailer of NAFTA...
has frequently touted a possible treatment, did not provide any benefit to the patients, even though it did no harm, NIH said in a statement.
Given that not long ago they were claiming the stuff was only useful for murdering the deathly ill, that’s a significant improvement.
Earlier this week, the World Health Organization said testing of hydroxychloroquine in its large multi-country trial of treatments for COVID-19 patients had been halted after new data and studies showed no benefit.

The US Food and Drug Administration revoked its emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 on Monday.

Trump had promoted the drug as a potential treatment, saying in March it could turn out to be "one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine" when used in combination with the antibiotic azithromycin.
...and zinc. Mustn't forget zinc, which is critical.
Last month, in a surprise announcement, Trump said he was taking a course of hydroxychloroquine as a preventative after two White House aides tested positive for the novel coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
that causes COVID-19.
But it didn’t even cause him to blink, which only goes to show that he is Satan and immune to poisons, not that it is safe for anyone else..
NIH announced its trial of hydroxychloroquine, which is used to treat malaria and rheumatoid conditions such as arthritis, in April.

#14  It really doesn't seem that hydroxychloroquine is working in any significant ways.

#12  Also, Israel remains in a state of low grade war that could go hot if the Arabs believe Israeli defenses have been weakened, which changes the risk evaluation. They can’t have entire units down with even a bad cold at the wrong time — and often the troops go home for the weekend, which makes most of the population front-line-adjacent.

This also should mean Israel requiring American visitors and others to either take a course of hydroxychloroquine-plus or be quarantined for two weeks before being released to wander the country at will.

#11  In Germany wearing a mask is mandatory on public transport and shops. People follow these rules because they make sense. Wearing a mask in crowded situation is the right thing to do. For obvious reason. If you wear a masks you reduce the risk of infecting others, and if the person next to you wears a mask he reduces the risk of infecting you. If both wear masks, the mutual benefit is obvious.

Wearing a mask vor 30 minutes or so isn't really a big sacrifice.

Outdoors, in non-cramped situations, most people take their masks off. Infection risk is minimal.

Wearing a mask shouldn't be a political issue.

#10   I don't deny the science involved with masks. I deny your ability to tell me I must wear a mask.

I haven’t noticed g(r)omgoru telling anyone they must wear a mask, merely that it will make a significant difference. Nor does he have any enforcement powers, either at home or over Americans.

This is not a binary, yes/no question; when the number of hospitalizations is too high or increasing, or when people are closely crowded together, or when a subpopulation (old folks in retirement homes or those with the wrong co-morbidities) is particularly at risk, mask wearing is the right thing to do. Among the healthy, where people have plenty of space, or when hospitalizations are at a reasonable level or deceasing, mask wearing is unnecessary. And this will hold true beyond the current pandemic — hopefully when flu season comes round in the autumn, people will pull out their masks if they or those around them fall into high risk categories. Ditto working from home and washing hands more frequently.

#9  This from the same people who can't decide whether masks are good or bad, think that ventilators are the sh*t and want us to stay in lockdown until there is a vaccine (i.e. potentially never).

#7  Murc good one. By the way I just tried to do a search on "know cases of lupus patients with covid-19 "virus". Couldn't find any real numbers. Which leads me to guess "they" don't want us to know. Something to ponder. I'm willing to be Skid might find some.

As far as masks. I rarely if ever see anyone and I do mean anyone with real surgical masks.

#4  IMO, people on the Right who reject masks are just a mirror image of people on the Left who reject HCQ. And both are brothers to Muslims who reject Polio vaccine because it was created by a Jew.

#2  The Democrats hate the drug because Trump mentioned it first.
Every organization that has ideas for developing its own treatment or vaccine hates it because it is cheap and available, and works and they can make nothing from it.
Who then will give it a fair test?

#1  What's NIH's latest advice? Masks work best when worn with skinny jeans. Tattoos help too.
