House Democrats will vote to make Washington D.C. a state - and rename the District of Columbia the Douglass Commonwealth
2020-06-26
[Daily Mail] House Democrats are poised to pass a bill that would make Washington, D.C., the nation's 51st state

D.C. would no longer stand for District of Columbia and instead be the 'Douglass Commonwealth,' named for the Maryland-born abolitionist Frederick Douglass
Wakanda is already spoken for.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer explained that Douglass, a Marylander, would balance out George Washington, a Virginian
Yeah, that's the ticket. Another famous Maryland Democrat: John Wilkes Booth
The bill is expected to pass the Democrat-led House, but go nowhere in the Republican-ruled Senate

Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.'s non-voting House members, said she expected the GOP to lose the Senate and the White House in November
I expect Democrats to lose the Hose and Holmes-Norten to commit Suicide by Cop.
Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden tweeted Thursday afternoon that he approved of D.C. statehood
Joe always had a fondness for hoods.
Republicans have been averse to the move because the city is overwhelmingly Democratic and statehood would likely give them two Democratic senators
That's why you give back the residential areas to Maryland and Virginia and cut off the obscenely generous federal government subsidized salaries and welfare benefits. Best of all, bye bye Norton.

#12  Just call D.C. "[egesta] hole". Anybody have a Ouija board to speak with Marion Barry?

#11  More kabuki for the rubes. It’ll never even get on the docket in the senate, and if by some chance the Democrats win both houses of Congress and the White House, they wouldn’t do anything about it anyway.

#8  Notice how the Dems "LEAD" the house but the 'Pubs "RULE" the Senate.

#7  Ha! Douglasville, GA. The sister city. No, sorry, you don't want to go there either.

#6  Maybe I've seen The Hanger Games, but my first thought was Capital District.

The concept of a neutral, whatever it is in practice *Marion Barry Cough*, Round Table Gathering is correct.

An En Passant move.

#5  Why not carve out the Federal District and give back the rest to Maryland? That should stop the residents of DC from bitching about "no taxation without representation".

#3  And Frederick Douglass would be appalled at its current condition.

#2  It's not likely that a Constitutional Amendment would pass muster.

After watching the riots in D.C., the district government is not ready for statehood. They cannot even protect the District and its inhabitants and its property from mob violence.

#1  Another Donk 'we don't like the Constitution' as written -

The Congress shall have Power To… exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States… (The U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8, Clause 17)

It can't be a state without an amendment. However, we apparently don't need an Article V change with our rulers SCOTUS.
