Trump signs executive orders on unemployment, payroll tax, evictions |
2020-08-09 |
[UPI] President Donald Trump![]() signed several executive orders Saturday, including an order to provide an extra $400 in weekly unemployment aid to those whose $600 weekly benefits expired in July as well as eviction protections and student loan relief. A fourth executive order would defer payroll tax payments for people who earn less than $100,000. It would take effect retroactively and continue through December. During a presser in Bedminster, N.J., Saturday to announce the orders, the President said if he is reelected in November he would "terminate" the payroll tax, which funds Social Security and Medicare benefits. The executive order to provide $400 in weekly benefits requires that 25% of that funding be paid by states, many of whom are struggling with unexpected drops in revenue and have pleaded with Congress to receive additional aid. Trump has sought a payroll tax deferral for more than a year with little support from Congress, but the other three issues were the subject of tense partisan negotiations in recent weeks as some parts of this spring's CARES Act expired. |

#14 House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blasted the four executive orders signed by President Trump for financial relief because of the coronavirus pandemic as “unconstitutional slop.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blasted the four executive orders signed by President Trump for financial relief because of the coronavirus pandemic as “unconstitutional slop.” Also see 26U.S.Code 7508A I am very impressed, Madam Speaker! With Trump, that is. Law passed in 1997, Pres. Clinton, with a (R) congress, Speaker Newt Gingrich. [giggle] |

#13 Chucky and Nancy were squealing like stuck pigs this morning on the MSM. They must be really worried. 'Flak gets heaviest right over the target' |

#12 It does look like Trump can cancel this deferred tax (Twitchy link). Covering all the bases - nice... |

#11 What will the Democrats do? Probably go on to another concocted 'crisis'. Time for the MSM to get their story straight. |

#10 So what will the Democrats do, impeach, sue. They have lost already. |

#9 Trump moved forward when he reviewed his legal options with appropriate staff. He doesn't move haphazardly. This is well thought out. The Democrats are totally outclassed. Now what is next. Believe me he is rolling on. |

#8 /\ "...almost certainly unconstitutional..." Agree 100%. But... ![]() |

#7 the downside here is that much of this all is almost certainly unconstitutional (the eviction moratorium is certainly legal, however) interesting follow up 1. who has standing to challenge this in court 2. will they do it 3. if they do, how soon will court act |

#6 It’s a 10-22% raise for workers. It puts cash in the hand of the voter, not a politician. I expect either party will have the spine to not forgive the tax. I cut my own payroll. My staff will see the money 8/15. With a note explaining the origin and terms of the cut. I feel sure they will spend the money wisely. |

#4 #2 Deferral now, forgiveness in Nov - if the right people win the election? |

#3 I can dig The Donald sticking it to the Dems, but what good is a deferral with millions unemployed? Getting rid of the tax once and for all anyway. |

#2 I'm not a fan of the payroll tax deferral; that means a delay in payment and nothing more. |

#1 Guess what, most networks failed to report this. Historic activity. This man is a machine. Democrats and media will have to order more adult diapers for their faces and hind parts. |
