Massive study finds 50% increase in autism among children whose mothers used marijuana while pregnant
2020-08-12
[DISRN] A recent analysis of more than 500,000 Canadian mothers and their children revealed a 50% increase in the risk of autism in kids whose mothers had used marijuana while pregnant, according to a report published Monday in Nature Medicine.

Daniel Corsi, the study's lead author and adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa, and his colleagues parsed data from all Ontario births occurring from 2007 to 2012.

The 503,065 children analyzed — 3,148 of whom had mothers that had used cannabis while pregnant — were followed for an average of seven years. Exactly 7,125 were diagnosed with varying levels of autism.

Researchers found that the rate of autism diagnoses among children with in utero cannabis exposure was 2.2%. Of those whose mothers did not use the drug during pregnancy, only 1.4% were diagnosed with autism.

#14  #6 still true. Asperger's types don't complain or cause waves. Closest thing to a human drone, without an implanted chip.

#11  Correlation is not causation. Maybe the mothers are inattentive for some reason.

#9  I have no idea whether there is a difference in marijuana use between aspies and others.

My aspie uses considerably less than, ahem...others.

#6  I read an article in the 90s that suggested that Silicon valley was drawing in folks with Aspergers who tend to be good programers because the focus the syndrom provided. Two parents with Aspergers are more likely to produce a child with Autism. That was their excuse for why so many autistic kids were found in the area.

Stanford also has/had a world class autism program so that probably draws parents with autistic kids to the area.

Haven't heard anything about it since the 90s so maybe the thing was debunked or just politically incorrect, anyway I thought it interesting.

#3  Autism is a "spectrum," so you may encounter people diagnosed autistic every day and not notice. What I do notice is I grew up seeing Down syndrome, Cystic fibrosis and so forth patients but I never see any now.

#1  So far every factor studied is something I did not do or have never done, except being female while pregnant. It’s a mystery.
