Stop Letting Children (aka Professional Athletes) Bully the World
2020-08-30
[PJ] Enough is enough, and if professional sports team owners haven’t realized it yet, succumbing to bullying and children’s temper tantrums never works out for anyone... especially in this case, where the adults who own the teams bear all the financial risk.

Let’s all be brutally honest. Athletes are extremely well-paid entertainers. The average Major League Baseball player makes $4,051,490 per year, and the average NBA player earns a whopping $7.7 million. They are paid as high or higher than the biggest stars in film, music, and television. But they are entertainers, and in the same way that an actor is paid huge sums because they cause even higher profits for the studio or production company, these athletes are getting paid exorbitant amounts so that the team owners can make profits. These players have no financial risk and should be incredibly grateful that they are paid such large amounts for playing a sport.

All people, including entertainers of every sort, have their own opinions, especially political opinions in the current divided climate. But there are precedents for athletes using their popularity to further the expression of their goals. Jackie Robinson, Tommy Smith, and Muhammad Ali are only a few of the many athletes who have effected positive change in our culture through the use of their popularity as entertainers. Other athletes went on to become actively involved in politics and became true leaders: Bill Bradley, J.C. Watts, Jack Kemp, and many others capitalized on their popularity to become legitimate leaders on a national level. They became true policymakers by building upon their athletic successes.

But the current athletes in the NBA and MLB do not act as responsible leaders, but as spoiled children. And they need to be taken to task for their behavior.

#15  IMO the problem will take care of itself. The fan base will dry up along with the big money. These pro athletes are killing the golden goose.

#14  PJMedia are the people who will screech "That is not who we are!" if somebody actually does anything about any of this.

#12  The next round of negotiations with the TV networks could be very interesting indeed if their ratings keep tanking the way they have been...and of course on "boycott" nights, the number of viewers is literally zero. Not much ad revenue from that.

#10  Daily Beast article accidentally kicks the cat by confirming it is all corporate sloganeering and committee focus group polls.

That isn't fight the power.

That's do what the power says or else.

#9  It's the culmination of years and years of white liberal/Leftists pronouncing almost every little thing is "racist" to the point of almost fear to say or do anything. No logical discussion or argumentation, no fair or honest assessment of history, and utter disregard for facts and statistics (e.g., crime perpetration, police shootings). Indeed, 14% of the population (below Hispanics now, perhaps) causing grief. Not all, of course. And the kow-tow'ing of corporations, professional sports, etc., pathetic. Not unexpected, but pathetic nonetheless.

I can only hope that when professional sports finally re-open the gates for fan attendance that there me many more empty seats. Many more.

#8  Well I had given up on everything except Major League Baseball and now that’s gone
Last fall professional football showed signs of returning to sanity but that’s gone
My alma mater one of the most conservative places in the galaxy had the football team stage a boycott and is still trying to remove the statue of the school’s founder because he was a Confederate general even though he he was openly and vocally anti slavery
What’s a man to do when everyone is going crazy over a shooting 2000 miles away
This BLM stuff is getting to the point you can’t arrest a black or even stop one for speeding
Fourteen percent of our population is driving our nation crazy and the white guilt and white privilege crowd are joining in
Reminds me of the upheaval in France before DeGaulle was elected when he said “it is me or the abyss”
Pretty much where we are with Trump you may hate his style and his politics and his way of doing business but it is him or the end of the United States

#6  The only people hurt by all this are indentured taxpayers caught with paying off huge sports complexes foisted upon them by mayors, city councils, and sports fanatics to provide recreational facilities for millionaires.

#4  Go nuts for professional sports!
Watch a fortunate few non-aborts
Perform for a crowd
With no balls, loud and proud,
In their time off from feelz and the courts!
