Paleos Build Coalition with BLM Activists

It was early June, and pro-Palestinian activists were marching in North Texas. They were apprehensive about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to annex territory in the occupied West Bank. But at several rallies, they were marching for a different cause ‐ an end to violence against Black people and an increased investment in communities of color.

Ask them how the Black Palestinians are treated in the Palestinian Territories, where they are the left-behind descendants of African slaves.

"Brothers and sisters, let's mobilize, let's organize … and let's unite our effort to change the system," said Fadya Risheq, president of the Dallas chapter of American Muslims for Palestine, or AMP-Dallas, at an Irving rally.

Pro-Palestinian activists say they have long emphasized building relationships with other marginalized communities, arguing that struggles for freedom and against oppression are interconnected. These activists marched with protesters in Ferguson, Mo., after the killing of Michael Brown by a police officer in 2014. The next year, over 1,000 Black activists signed a statement of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

This spring, North Texas groups formed a coalition called In Defense of Black Lives-Dallas, which is part of the national umbrella group Movement for Black Lives. They invited the Palestine Action Committee of Texas, or PACT, to join, along with groups fighting for immigrant and undocumented rights.

But across the U.S., the pro-Palestinian stance of some groups within the social justice movement has disturbed pro-Israel Jewish groups.
