2nd Republican senator comes out against Supreme Court nomination vote before election
2020-09-21
[IsraelTimes] A second Republican senator, Lisa Daddy, can I be a senator? Murkowski
... representing K Street ...
of Alaska, says she would oppose any vote on a new Supreme Court nominee "this close to" the November 3 presidential election, making a delay more likely.

She adds her voice to that of Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who went further yesterday, saying the replacement to late justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg should be made only by the president elected in November.

If two more Republican senators join Murkowski and Collins, they could block, or at least delay, a confirmation vote.

#15  You needed confirmation?

#14  support from state teachers' and firefighters' unions

Well, that confirms it. Murkowski is a Democrat.

#13  Collins is going to lose, and good riddance. Nobody is going to vote for her worthless butt, which she is too dumb to understand. As for Graham, I doubt he'll turn coat at this moment. I personally suspect we'll have 51 to confirm (Romney is a Democrat, and Manchin always votes with the liberals, despite constant rumors to the contrary). Even if one other deserted, we could pass it with 51-50 (unless Pence votes against Trump for some dumb reason).

I have faith we'll get the seat. I also personally have faith we'll win the election, making the point moot. But we'll have to wait and see on that last point.

#12  For those who have forgotten:

Murkowski faced the most difficult election of her career in the August 24, 2010, Republican Party primary election against Joe Miller, a former U.S. magistrate judge[14] supported by former Governor Sarah Palin.[15] The initial ballot count for the primary showed her trailing Miller by a margin of 51–49%, with absentee ballots yet to be tallied.[16] After the first round of absentee ballots were counted on August 31, Murkowski conceded the race, stating that she did not believe that Miller's lead would be overcome in the next round of absentee vote count.[17][18]

On September 17, 2010, Murkowski said that she would mount a write-in campaign for the Senate seat.[21] Her write-in campaign was aided in large part with substantial monetary aid and assistance from the Native corporations and PACs, as well as support from state teachers' and firefighters' unions.[22]

On November 17, 2010, the Associated Press reported that Murkowski had become only the second Senate candidate (after Strom Thurmond in 1954) to win a write-in campaign, thereby retaining her seat.[23] Murkowski emerged victorious after a two-week count of write-in ballots showed she had overtaken Miller.[24][25] Miller did not concede defeat.[25] U.S. Federal District Judge Ralph Beistline granted an injunction to stop the certification of the election due to "serious" legal issues and irregularities raised by Miller as to the hand count of absentee ballots.[26] On December 10, 2010, an Alaskan judge dismissed Miller's case, clearing the way for Murkowski's win;[27] however, Miller appealed the decision to the state Supreme Court, and the results were not certified. On December 13, Miller appealed the Alaska Superior Court decision of the prior week to the Alaska Supreme Court. Miller's appeal was rejected by the state Supreme Court on December 22, 2010.[28] On December 28, 2010, U.S. District Judge Ralph Beistline dismissed Miller's lawsuit. Murkowski was certified as the winner on December 30 by Gov. Sean

#10  Reckless and irresponsible of these people to leave an incomplete and most likely deadlocked Supreme Court with a presidential election coming. You get a 4-4 tie in a case like Gore v Bush in 2000 and then what? The House decides? That's worse than RINO. That's full on Democrat.

#9  Murkowski is just an attention ho. Needs to leave office.

#8  Recess appointment in October, when Congress declares a recess in order to let members who are up for re-election go home to campaign.

It's a temporary backfill that prevents us from having a short handed, deadlocked Court in November. It can expire if the challenger wins or alternatively, be extended if the incumbent wins. It literally turns on the election.

#7  If they oppose it, then they will lose any chance for reelection.

Nonsense. Murkowski is not up for reelection this year. Even if she was she's a lock in Alaska. Collins is likely to lose regardless of what she does.

#5  Watch though, if 4 Repubs come out against having a vote, then several more will go along with it that are in tight races.

McConnel should strip all the "defectors" of every leadership position they have, and move them to the least important committees and the lowest position in those. Actions must have consequences.

#4  Murkowski, Collins, and now probably Grassley (RINO if there ever was one) and that leaves the whole thing sitting on squishes and weaklings like Romney or Graham, unless someone twists Manchin's (D WV) arm really hard. That would be the ideal thing though, get just one Dem to give them a fair vote. The GOP screwup that handed GA over to a dem is biting them really hard now.

#3  The President chosees a nominee, the Senate determines the outcome. If they are a Constitutionalist meaning Originalist or Textualist, they should survive the process to fill this vacancy.
