Democrats prepare bill limiting U.S. Supreme Court justice terms to 18 years
2020-09-26
Kabuki for the rubes — the Senate will never even consider it in committee. Still a warning for what they will do if they get control of House, Senate, and White House all at once..
[CA.REUTERS] Democrats in of the House of Representatives will introduce a bill next week to limit the tenure of U.S. Supreme Court justices to 18 years from current lifetime appointments, in a bid to reduce partisan warring over vacancies and preserve the court’s legitimacy.

The new bill, seen by Rooters, would allow every president to nominate two justices per four-year term and comes amid heightened political tensions as Republican President Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
prepares to announce his third pick for the Supreme Court after the death on Sept. 18 of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, with just 40 days to go until the Nov. 3 election.

"It would save the country a lot of agony and help lower the temperature over fights for the court that go to the fault lines of cultural issues and is one of the primary things tearing at our social fabric," said Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, U.S. Representative Ro Khanna, who plans to introduce the legislation on Tuesday, along with Representatives Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts and Don Beyer of Virginia.

Partly due to rising life expectancies, justices serve increasingly long tenures, on average now more than 25 years.

#17  Term limits for everyone!

Up the 2 year for representatives to 6 years like the senate. You get 2 terms for the house and 2 years for the senate.

Expand the supreme court to 50 and each state gets to appoint their own justice for a term of 1 year. Vice-president is the tie breaker.

#16  How many years has Pelosi been in office?

And a change like this requires an amendment. Pelosi as usual ignores the constitution.

Lets put in term limits for the lot of them.

8 years is enough for President so 8 years is enough for representatives.

2 terms is enough for President to 2 terms is enough for Senate.

Make it 16 years for justices, with one reappointment of 16 years, with senatorial advise and consent.

#12  ...I point out again, it will be challenged in court. Think you'll get an unbiased hearing?

You are dealing with a branch of the government that has expanded its purview and power for the last 60 years unconstrained.

#11  I don't see anything in the Constitution that says anything on the number or term of Supreme Court Justices. Seems to imply it is up to Congress.
