Among Vietnamese American voters, the Trump-Biden presidential race inflames old wounds
2020-10-18
This discusses politics among the Vietnamese-Americans in the Seattle area. It surprised me that any Vietnamese were considering voting for Biden, since their cousins in my red state are (1) very heavily armed -- I'm talking near company-level TOE -- (2) charmingly say "Communist" when they mean "Democrat", and (3) would crawl over ground glass to vote for Trump again.
[SeattleTimes] They were called traitors, communists and, in a common Vietnamese insult, dogs.

Such was the reaction in some quarters of the internet when material about Vietnamese Americans for Biden hit social media last month. Big, red X’s covered the faces of those pictured, including Democratic Washington state Rep. My-Linh Thai.

"Joe Biden is a man who worshipped China," claimed one Facebook poster in Vietnamese. Another objection, with enormous resonance in a community that leans heavily for President Donald Trump: Biden, the Facebook poster said, opposed taking in refugees after the Vietnam War.

Those claims are contested by progressives, who assert it is Trump who has strengthened China and that Biden has had complicated but ultimately critical positions on that communist country
before the check cleared, that is.
Such are the battles among Vietnamese Americans in the run-up to the November election, immersed in historical wounds relating to war, a repressive communist regime
You mean, there's another type?
and an age-old enmity toward China, which once occupied Vietnam. The trauma is still palpable, with some vividly recalling their harrowing boat escape from Vietnam.

#10  Thing, yeah, that movie was 30 years ago. If they remake it now (God forbid) they would cast a non-binary individual named Butch in place of Ms. Pfeiffer. (I threw up a little bit just imagining that.)

#9  Matt: ooh, that was back when things were normal and chicks were fine.

#8  Also, the 1996-99 TV series Millenium was set in Seattle and as you would expect of a Chris Carter job, it was about lots of whackos...

#7  Don't remember that one, but this memorable scene was also set in Seattle.

#5  Matt, I'm beginning to think that Seattle is a particularly evil place.

#4  There you go again, getting all hung up on facts and logic. Progressives feelz that way, so no further inquiry is permitted.

The older Vietnamese, at least, possess an incredibly valuable piece of information, i.e., what it's like to lose a war. They should regularly speak at the service academies, not that anyone would listen.

#1  Too many generations separated from events who now don't know that it was Biden's party that cut military aid to South Vietnam after the withdraw. Thus, setting up the conquest of the south.
