The X-44 MANTA Doesn't Look Like a Plane |
2020-11-22 |
[NationalInterest] Instead of using standard control surfaces to maneuver while in flight, the MANTA maneuvered using thrust vectoring, in which the dual engine’s exhaust nozzles could direct exhaust in various directions.![]() #1 on my Christmas list this year... |

#11 Guessing from the photo, vector thrusting makes more sense than control surfaces. |

#9 My error on the Lawn Dart, it was the F104 Starfighter with the tiny wings I think. |

#7 We always called the F-16 the Lawn Dart due to the single engine and some electrical issues back in the early 90s. Never heard of the F-4 as Rhino. We called it the Flying Brick. Which it was, but it had the thrust to back it up. The F-105 was the Thud. Because that’s the sound it made when planting into the ground. Thud Ridge used to be required reading. |

#6 Not familiar w/ lawndart for the 105; thought it was Thud. And vaguely remember Rhino for the mighty F-4, but only the non-navy versions. Thanks. |

#5 As a groundpounder and treadhead, i plead your only observer status on these matters but I thought nicknames were sacred for a couple of generations amongst zoomies? Rhino (F4) and Lawndart (F105) were taken as I recall. Since we considered aviators outside the ground services as gentlemen who shared a common tailor, i await enlightenment. |

#4 Re #2: 'Lawn Dart?' Not likely, its already taken, even tho the new and PC Nik is Rhino. No idea where that came from , unless some vague Tailhook Scandal reference. |
