New Jersey issues sweeping changes on how police can use force
2020-12-22
[New Jersey Herald] New Jersey police officers will be barred from using physical or deadly force against civilians except as a last resort and must intervene if they see another officer going too far, according to sweeping new changes to the state's policy on when police can use force.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said Monday that his office's yearlong effort to overhaul the state's 20-year-old policies was meant to protect citizens, build community trust and reframe the way officers approach exchanges with the public.

"We're going to preserve the sanctity of human life, we're going to preserve the rights and liberties of our residents and we're going to try to resolve every interaction in a peaceful and respectful manner," Grewal said in an interview.

"We're going to try to de-escalate — that's a duty we have," he said. "And if we have to use force, it's going to be a last resort that's reasonable, necessary and proportional."

"This is a paradigm shift," Grewal said.

#3  So how many law enforcement officers do you think will leave New Jersey and how many will retire on the job and not go out on calls ?

#2  I can just see future rules: "if a suspect shoots at you, but misses, you may not shoot back."

#1  Since all Police should have body cams by now.

How about adding a mandatory fully served 6 month jail time for resisting arrest but avoidance (running) delay using aggressively verbal confrontations during arrest cycle.

Then 18-36 months for physically resisting arrest.

With another 5 years for assaulting a Law Enforcement Officer added as appropriate.

ALL IF... clearly seen on the LEO or other body cam video doing so?

Likely more arrests would become less physical.
