Rare Pandemic Anomaly: Larry King's widow reveals his cause of death was not COVID-19
2021-01-29
[Today.com] Larry King's widow has revealed his cause of death, saying that it was not COVID-19 even though he had been hospitalized with it earlier this month.

The legendary broadcast and television personality died at 87 on Jan. 23 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. His widow, Shawn King, told "Entertainment Tonight" that while the family feared for his life after COVID-19 put him in the intensive-care unit, it was not the cause of death.

"It was an infection, it was sepsis," she said.
We pray for sepsis when bad guys are involved. But eventually you have to die of something, and he’d beaten everything else.

I understand, and agree. Yet the CDC data consistently shows pneumonia (only) deaths are 50% of COVID deaths. But you have to do grade-school math to find the pneumonia only number.

#3  Could there be others? No doubt. Any infection or condition weakens the body, making it more susceptible to other stresses, and Covid appears to be particularly nasty. The impressive list of everything else that he’d already beaten, according to the article:

King, who was still hosting two digital talk shows on Ora.Tv and Hulu after retiring from CNN in 2010, had a history of health issues. The New York Post reported that he was hospitalized in November with a blood flow issue. He had also endured heart disease, lung cancer, prostate cancer and a near-fatal stroke in 2019 that left him in a coma for weeks.

Final daughter has been in congestive heart failure since the age of fifteen, half her life, though it was only diagnosed and treated a few years ago. She used to be hospitalized for sepsis every few months, because her body just wasn’t strong enough to fight it off.

#2  The CARES Act created a 20% add-on to be paid for Medicare patients with COVID-19. The act further created a $100 billion fund that is being used to financially assist hospitals — a “portion” of which will be “used to reimburse healthcare providers, at Medicare rates, for COVID-related treatment of the uninsured,” according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Hospital administrators might well want to see COVID-19 attached to a discharge summary or a death certificate. If it's a straightforward, garden-variety pneumonia that a person is admitted to the hospital for, if they're on Medicare – typically, the diagnosis-related group lump sum payment would be $5,000. But if it's COVID-19 pneumonia, then it's $13,000, and if that COVID-19 pneumonia patient ends up on a ventilator, it goes up to $39,000.

So gosh Besoeker, it's a mystery.
