| [NRTtv] SULAIMANI — A Kurdish woman was executed last week at Sanandaj Central Prison in Iran’s Kurdistan province, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights said on Friday (January 29). The watchdog group, which reports on human rights abuses in Iranian Kurdistan, said that the woman was hanged on Wednesday. “The identity of the woman, who was detained on charges of premeditated murder and sentenced to death by Iranian judiciary, has not been clarified,” the group said. Iranian state media outlets have not reported on the execution so far, it added. On Friday, the UN Human Rights office condemned the apparent executions of 28 inmates in Iran since mid-December, including several prisoners from minority groups. On January 18, the Iranian authorities executed a Kurdish inmate on a murder charge at the same prison. According to Hengaw, 59 ethnic Kurds were executed in Iran during 2020, including four of whom were convicted of political offenses. Fifty-one others were sentenced to death for “premeditated murder.” In 2019, Iran executed the second most people after China, according to Amnesty International. |
