Pandemic's ‘Essential Workers’ May find Citizenship Path

Deep in bathos territory, a perfect example of the type. One imagines the suffering of the journalists and editors involved from the ladles of artificial sweetener added to the vats of artificial tears.
[Dallas News] Jacoba has sliced and packed chicken fillets at a processing factory and cooked savory stews in a restaurant kitchen, keeping people fed at her two jobs.

But for the past 24 years, the Mexican illegal immigrant, who asked that her last name not be published because she lacks legal immigration status, has feared a deportation agent might pop up at any time.

Could her anxiety finally be coming to an end?

Jacoba is one of an estimated 4 million to 5 million unauthorized immigrants who are essential workers.

They are first responders and last responders. They tend to sick patients, keep food on tables, and repair vehicles so others can get to their jobs. They’ve kept the country running during a pandemic that has taken more than 420,000 lives.

Now, some key politicos want to repay immigrant essential workers for their contribution to the fight against the coronavirus. There are at least three legislative proposals in Congress aimed at legalizing unauthorized immigrants who are essential workers.

The thank-you is a stunning pivot from the often-racist abuse that illegal immigrants took under the administration of President Donald Trump. While the future of these bills is uncertain, the number of proposals has spiked optimism among immigrant groups.
