-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Record-Breaking Cold in North Texas
2021-02-14
[National Weather Service] A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect through 6 PM Monday evening for the entire region. Heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with 3- 6 inches of total snow accumulations with isolated higher amounts of 6-8 inches possible. Strong winds will lead to drifting and blowing snow, which as the possibility of reducing visibilities to 1 mile at times.

Temperatures will be EXTREMELY cold, with near-blizzard conditions possible. Hazardous travel is likely for several days due to icy bridges and roadways, and travel will become impossible and possibly life-threatening. Wind chills as low as -15 F for several days could induce hypothermia. Travel is highly discouraged for Monday and Tuesday. If you have to venture outside, remember to bring all the necessary tools and supplies in your car.
I think we're forecast to break the record low tomorrow by twenty degrees.

#24  And its going to get COLDER. Like Denver Cold.

Next 24: High 9 low 4. Tmrw night overnight low -3. Snow 1-3 inches.

The biggest issue isn't the cold or snow, its that it's ongoing for nearly a week. Usually, the weather pushed through quickly after a couple of days. Last time there was this much weather was the Superbowl week back in Feb 2011, when the record low of 15 was set Feb 10.

The thing is that lows been in the teens and highs in the 20s for a couple days already, and the single digits are just about unheard of in this area ever in history (except maybe the ice age). And its not going above freezing until Friday. That will be a solid week of lows in the teens to single digits and highs below freezing, along with snow off and on. Pretty much unheard of in Dallas area. Remarkable!

#21  Yes, Greater Houston freaks out at the slightest hint of snow or ice. And they can't drive in it for anything.

#18  â€œMany human beings say that they enjoy the winter, but what they really enjoy is feeling proof against it. For them there is no winter food problem. They have fires and warm clothes." Richard Adams

I can't whine about the cold here. Half of my colleagues have spent time--some of them winterovers--at the South Pole.

#17  Remember in the 1970's it was Global Ice Age by the 1980's. With over 60+ Scientific Studies proving it was happening.

It didn't in the 80's has predicted.

So 40+ years later we are back to Square 1 with some predicting a Global Ice Age.

Hollywood must be foaming at the mouth for a new $100M Climate movie with Al Gore being the PAID technical advisor. "Water World Meets Frozen"

I wonder how long before they try to tie the Scamdemic to the Man Made Climate Hoax.

Pikers, that's called 'some light snow' around here.

Mercutio, -28 is cold enough. We were at -11 this AM with -32 Wind Chill. We're up to -2F right now, so almost balmy compared to you.

#13  The only win is survival:p Remember, 3 hours without shelter. And one thing ND doesn't have is the humidity Texas gets. That makes it so much worse for cold.

My boy is a real Texan, he asked if winter could be over because he misses summer.

#12  OK, Silent, you win.... but I deserve some extra credit considering I spent most of the last 20 years in Hawai'i

#9  I'm not cold:p It's my silly neighbors from Nigeria and other warm climes:P

My personal cold record was in Keene, North Dakota, pop 36 not counting all the roughnecks and rig crew. It was -47 F. Top that off with 70 mph winds and it was bloody cold. My work unit floor was frozen and the heaters couldn't put out enough heat to unfreeze it. When we rigged down, I had to borrow a steam line to cut through 4" of ice to get our wire runs free. Later that month, the directional hand asked me to come help him strap a motor and since it was bright and sunny, I thought medium weight insulated gloves were enough. Nope, in 15 minutes I got a light case of frostbite. Took 2 days for my hands to quit hurting.

#3  Everyone here is very excited and freaked out. After working in the Bakken and having lived in places with yearly snow, I'm meh. I was ready last week, so have avoided the madhouse the stores have become.

Oh and my wife suggests if you are cold in bed, grab the kitty and stick it under the covers at your feet for kitty powered heat:)
