Wood radio cabinets wee set in the middle of sitting rooms, far from walls, windows, and curious neighbors. The evening BBC ritual was by now a national joke, "Did you hear at 9:20 a Jew killed a German soldier and ate his heart?" someone would ask. "Impossible for three reasons: Germans have no heart, Jews don't eat pork, and at 9:30 everyone is listening to the BBC." |
