Disappointing Increase in Unemployment Claims (week ending 13Feb)
2021-02-19
From the Dept of Labor
[DOI.gov] In the week ending February 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 861,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 55,000 from 793,000 to 848,000. The 4-week moving average was 833,250, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 13,750 from 823,000 to 836,750.
Basically there has been little net improvement in the labor market since Nov 2020 or so. The increased employment from businesses that are improving is being balanced by continued businesses that have run out of capital or afraid of riots or realize they can't make it with increase in minimum wage or various other causes.

#6  Did we forget what stagflation means? We're about to have a refresher course.

#5  just gonna get worse

maybe but the majority of forecasts see growth;

optimists see as high as 3 or 4% GDP growth for calendar 2021, a lot see 2% or less, I couldn't find any of the traditional forecasts (economic forecasters at big conglomerates and major companies) that forecast negative growth

Truth is a lot of small business are not coming back and we have no well tested forecast models to predict how many. We also don't have models that can deal with the post pandemic corporate restructuring. Finally the amount of damage the Biden Admin will do to the economy is unknown.
