Dem activists backed by WH launch dark money group to drum up support for Biden administration
2021-02-21
[American Digest] The campaign is over and President Joe Biden is already busy ruining the country. So why does he need more help pushing his policies?

An organization calling itself "Building Back Together" is bundling dark money donations to sell the American people on Biden’s radical agenda, the Washington Examiner reported. The organization will enjoy freedoms as a registered 501(c)(4) that political candidates’ organizations simply don’t have.

The "Building Back Together" organization will get down to business drumming up support for Biden’s coronavirus package that comes with a hefty $1.9 trillion price tag. Included in it are additional relief payments of $1,400 and the job-killing minimum wage increase to $15 per hour.

Although these types of organizations are prohibited from supporting a candidate, they are able to conduct media campaigns based on issues. Rather than face the restrictions of campaign finance rules that require strict tracking and reporting of money collected and spent, their activity is less scrutinized provided they stay away from endorsing political candidates directly.

For instance, there is no limit to how much they’re allowed to spend. There is also currently no requirement to release the names and addresses of big donors, making 501(c)(4)s both more powerful and less accountable.

This is problematic, according to Jeff Hauser of the Revolving Door Project, which is dedicated to keeping corporate money out of the executive government appointee process. "Big picture, dark money erodes trust in politics because even if the contribution is unknown to the public, key political figures can be aware of who is supporting their agendas and aspirations," Hauser said.

The White House did not respond to the Examiner for comment. However, this practice is not new and something that previous administrations utilized similarly. Former President Barack Obama was challenged on his promises to get big money out of political campaigns while he used a 501(c)(4)s to hide those large donors that would otherwise need to be disclosed.

The problem with money in politics is not new, and the use of these particular types of groups is just another loophole to exploit. The main concern should be that Biden’s policies will be foisted on the American people — whether they want it or not.
