Pictures of damage to 777 from engine failure
2021-02-23
[Business Insider] New photos show a Boeing 777 engine that failed shortly after takeoff, including a fan blade that snapped.

The images were released by the US National Transportation Safety Board late Monday. They show the United Airlines plane that was forced to turn back and land in Denver on Saturday.

An image of the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine shows where a fan blade snapped and damage to the blade beside it.

#3  Low altitude engine failure with gear stuck up and enough fuel for Hawaii. Sounds exciting.

#2  lucky it didn't take out the hydraulics. Sure there are backup systems but lucky the gear was still down and other flight control surfaces were in place

#1  Noncritical to flight.

Unless your seat is right above that strike, then its tequila shot time.

How is this maintenance organized; is it the airline's responsibility to service and maintain the engine, or is that subbed out to a certified P&W inspection crew?
