Egypt court upholds 3-year prison sentence for Mubarak-era Minister El-Feky
2021-03-05
[AlAhram] The verdict, which came more than three years after former information minister Anas El-Feky was handed the sentence in a 2018 retrial, is final

Egypt's Court of Cassation, the country's highest appeals court, upheld on Thursday a three-year jail sentence against Mubarak-era information minister Anas El-Feky for squandering public money in 2009.

El-Feky was convicted of squandering some EGP 12 million from the government-run Egyptian Radio and Television Union by exempting Egyptian satellite channels from paying the fees for broadcasting Egyptian football league and cup games. The offenses reportedly took place during the 2009-2010 season and the beginning of the 2010-2011 season.

El-Feky had originally been given a seven-year prison sentence in the case by a Cairo criminal court in 2012, before he was granted a retrial by the Court of Cassation in 2013.
Has he been in prison the whole time since his original arrest?
In 2018, the former minister was given a three-year jail term by a Cairo criminal court in a retrial. He filed an appeal against the 2018 verdict, but it was rejected on Thursday, which means the verdict is now final.

El-Feky served as Mubarak's information minister from 2004 to 12 February 2011, resigning the day after Mubarak was ousted.
