‘This Was A Bloodbath’ - Liberal Journalists Outraged After Huffington Post Fires 1/3rd Of Its Staff | |
2021-03-10 | |
![]() [Zero Hedge] - Just months after it was acquired by Buzzfeed in a fire sale, the Huffington Post - the once-pioneering Internet media property - has elicited an outpouring of criticism from the blue-check crowd after abruptly firing nearly 50 reporters, roughly one-third of the site's staff. Learn To Code™ News of the layoffs first emerged on Twitter, as dozens of newly-fired journos tweeted about their misfortune, but was soon picked up by Defector, the cooperatively-owned media property started by former staff writers from Deadspin. Another site I used to like reading 'til they became a bunch of lefty douchebags. According to Defector, BuzzFeed founder Jonah Peretti announced Tuesday during an all-hands meeting that 47 HuffPo staffers in the US, including eight managers, would be losing their jobs in order to "drive long-term sustainability." Rival journos slamed Peretti, accusing him of traumatizing the laid-off journalists by forcing them to repeatedly refresh their inbox to see if they had received one of the dreaded pink slips. Anybody who didn't receive a notice by 1300ET was said to be "safe". As if this wasn't undignified enough not nearly enough for me - I want anal COVID swabs on the exit interviews! , Peretti reportedly set the password for the mass-layoff meeting to "spr!ngisH3r3," an innocuous message that contrasted sharply with the situation as hand. One member of the Buzzfeed union described the firings as a "bloodbath". "This is a bloodbath," a HuffPost staffer and union member told Defector. "It’s worse than the worst-case scenario for what any of us thought we would see when we got this announcement a couple hours ago. And the fucked-up way that they announced this notwithstanding, this is a just bloodbath for an award-winning international newsroom full of absolutely stellar journalists who didn’t deserve this." "The initial reaction is I can’t believe what little chance we were given to show what we can do to help this company," the staffer said. Some of the reporters and their allies recounted the firing in terms that one might reasonably describe as "melodramatic." Oh - it is massively over the top melodramatic internet cinema! Go forth, and marvel at the astounding level of ginned up outrage, alarm, pity, and all that passive - aggressive bullshit. It would require a heart of stone not to laugh.
![]() Hillary Frey, the site’s executive editor, and Louise Roug, the executive editor for international, will be departing in a restructuring effort aimed at stemming financial losses. It has been a particularly grim year for the media industry. The coronavirus pandemic undermined a business model already on shaky ground due to a massive shift in digital advertising spend toward tech giants Google and Facebook. Layoffs across the industry were on track to break records late last year, Variety reported. But you helped remove the evil Trumpkins, so your sacrifice is a small one. Relatively. ![]() "Though BuzzFeed is a profitable company, we don’t have the resources to support another two years of losses," Peretti said. "We want to ensure the homepage remains a top destination on the internet," he added. "We also want to maintain high traffic, preserve your most powerful journalism, lean more deeply into politics and breaking news, and build a stronger business for affiliate revenue and shopping content." Just with less staff. #4 HuffPo has only been around since 2005 (Andrew Breitbart was one of the founders) but has had a lot of exciting history. On the good side they did a nice job covering wounded soldiers. On the bad side they 'sort of promised' people they would be paid for contributions then didn't pay them, they outright stole content, the published a long article in praise of Jeffrey Epstein (in the summer of 2019) and mislead their readers about Trump's ban on travel from selected countries. |
