Defiant Piers Morgan defends freedom of speech after quitting GMB
2021-03-10
[Mail On Line] Piers Morgan today doubled down after quitting Good Morning Britain over his criticism of Meghan Markle calling her incendiary claims to Oprah about the Royal Family 'contemptible' and declaring: 'I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth' as it was claimed the Duchess of Sussex went to ITV and complained.

Speaking outside his West London home Mr Morgan told reporters: 'If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.'

He added: 'I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible', before revealing that he left on the day more people watched GMB than its BBC rival, five years after Piers transformed the ITV ratings flop. He tweeted later: 'Good Morning Britain beat BBC Breakfast in the ratings yesterday for the first time. My work is done'.

In another extraordinary twist, it was claimed by the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian that Meghan made a formal complaint to ITV about Mr Morgan. The broadcaster, who paid £1million to show the Oprah interview, did not deny the claim and representatives for the duchess declined to comment.

#9  A soap opera. And Meghan is a professional actress.

#8  Perfect.

Of course, Piers Morgan must be destroyed for even suggesting that talking heads are anything other than 110% trustworthy and your betters.

#5  I don't understand the hit job (the markles are disney agents, who will collect more money in interest from the $7million payment then most Americans' yearly income) unless it was just time to pick on another national marquee.

It was such a tin eared job that I was flooded with stuff like, "Hey, Harry was a combat helicopter pilot so listen up shut up."

My first thought, "Yeah, well, not the first time a serviceman's life was ruined by marrying a stripper."

#4  Not much of a fan of royalty. That said, I have to admire the Queen. She has led a life defined by duty all the while under constant and often adversarial scrutiny. Definitely not for me.

#3  back in 2008, Morgan won a goofy Celebrity Apprentice contest. Trump called Morgan 'ruthless, arrogant, evil and obnoxious' but since Trump awarded Morgan the win, this was apparently, a compliment.

#1  Churchill was smarter than a lot of people gave him credit for. His ego was on a par with Trump's.
