| 40 percent of Marines have declined the coronavirus vaccine |

| [The Hill] Forty percent of Marines are declining the coronavirus vaccine, according to data obtained by CNN. There has been a 38.9 percent decline rate, but the Marines are providing information to individuals to encourage them to get the vaccine. "The Navy and Marine Corps are providing substantial educational information broadly, and working with commands to ensure Marines, Sailors, and beneficiaries have accurate information regarding the safety and efficacy of the vaccines to encourage individuals to get immunized," Capt. Andrew Wood, a Marines spokesman, told The Hill in a statement. The data showed that 75,500 Marines have received the vaccine and 48,000 have declined it. Overall, the acceptance rate is 61.1 percent. The numbers for the data include reserves, active-duty and Individual Mobilization Augmentee Marines, according to CNN. |

| #13 In the elderly Vitamin D is apparently not metabolized well. (Ditto pretty much everything else, sadly.) In the obese, Vitamin D is apparently stored in the fat cells instead of being available for metabolization. Recommended Daily Allowance numbers are the minimum required for bare survival, not to optimize thriving. But going outside in the sunshine between 10a.m. and 2p.m. with bare arms and legs from spring through fall will get a fair-skinned person over the RDA — all of you easily tanned people will have to work harder while I do my best to avoid being sunburnt yet again. |

| #11 One stat that might be of interest. As of today in MN, there were 6,957 deaths attributed to CCP-flu. Of those deaths 89% were 65 years or older, so there does seem to be an age, and presumably, health-related component. |

| #10 only statistically... too many studies to cite. I will admit if you're one of the relatively few young healthy people who crump from the disease, stats don't mean much. Me, being somewhat old and decrepit, I took a chance on the shot. |

Posted by: Besoeker 2021-04-11 05:38 Beo, An interesting dynamic from the past is one of the factors at work here. In the late 80s/early 90s, DOD started administering vaccines that had NOT been formally approved for general use (keep that term in mind) to the troops in the field, especially for anthrax. This got worse during DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM when the military was frantically trying to vaccinate people for service in the Persian Gulf and was running dangerously low on the standard vaccines. The result was utterly foreseeable - people started having bad, and in some cases life-threatening reactions. By the late 90s, the matter had made its way to the courts and the mess was bad enough that Congress stepped in and made it clear that NO MILITARY MEMBER could be forced to take a vaccine that had not been cleared for general use by the FDA. And of course, not one of the current COVID vaccines is 'general use', they're all emergency use only. There are still plenty of people around who remember the fallout from this - 'vaccine denial' isn't a big thing in the military, for obvious reasons. And as a former Marine friend of mine pointed out to me this morning, the uniforms and the suits at DOD have wasted so much trust over the last 30 years that even under the best of conditions people would have been skeptical. Now, DOD could just say 'Screw it,' and order people to get the shot. And all it will take is a single E-1 someplace to take it to court, and it holds things up for weeks at best while unused vaccine doses pile up and are eventually wasted. A court could eventually say, "Tough luck, take the shot," but by that point the services will be even further behind the curve. No good solutions. Mike |
