US Coast Guard fires warning shots at Iranian vessel: Pentagon
2021-05-11
[Aljazeera] The Pentagon has said a United States Coast Guard ship fired about 30 warning shots after 13 vessels from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) came close to it and other US Navy vessels in the Strait of Hormuz — an account rejected by Tehran.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the warning shots were fired after the Iranian fast boats came as close as 137 metres (450 feet) of six US military vessels, including the USS Monterey, that were escorting the guided-missile submarine Georgia.

#10  The USS Georgia, the ballistic missile sub was in transit on the suface, accompanied by the USS Monterey (CG-61) a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser which just led the seizure of Iranian arms shipment to Yemen in the same AO. Not clear what portion of the rest of the escort was USCG, but they appear to be the new 110ft cutters according to the USCG website linked here:

#9  This is just speculation, but I wonder if we're using Coast Guard cutters because the LCS class is not fit for purpose. Isn't this exactly the type of mission the LCS was meant for?

I can't find a list of the 7 ships escorting the Georgia, but I'd be pleasant surprised to see an LCS among them and not under tow.

#8  Maybe the Navy is busy re-naming the ships to be inclusive gender-neutral?

#6  Coast Guard can be seconded to the War Defense Department as needed. It is one of the Armed Services.

#5  Perhaps some ace reporter will ask Jen Psaki to explain.

#4  Yeah - what's up with that? When I hear US Coast Guard I think of bagging boats with weed on the Atlantic Coast, not firing at camel jockey speedboats in the Med.

#3  This is going to piss Biden's handlers off. Isn't the Rules of Engagement to surrender? Perhaps someone forgot to change that back to the Obama policy.

#2  Isn't the USCG under DHS nowadays?
