In secret texts, U.S. military officials lamented leaving Americans behind in Kabul
2021-09-01
BLUF:
[Just The News] "We are f*cking abandoning American citizens," an Army colonel assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division wrote Sunday in frustration in a series of encrypted messages that detailed the failed effort to extricate a group of American citizens, hours before the last U.S. soldiers departed Afghanistan.

The text messages and emails were provided to Just the News by Michael Yon, a former Special Forces soldier and war correspondent who was among the private citizens working with private networks and the military to rescue stranded Americans.

Yon told Just the News that a group of Americans were abandoned at the Kabul airport, pleading for help as military officials told them they were finished with evacuations.

#4  Theoretically, DoD has to do whatever the CinC says. We saw recently that doesn't necessarily happen. Theoretically, DoS does whatever the hell it wants, as the SecState is just a hand holder for the prexident and the lifers don't feel much loyalty to anyone who comes and goes, regardless of where they are on the org chart.

Just sayin'...

#3  You could read this as the DoS setting the DoD up for failure.

A bit down the road, but I wonder what effect this fiasco will have on military enlistment and retention rates. "Be all less than you can be" is not inspirational.

#1  If all the USCITS (Americans) are successfully evacuated, the Taliban has no pawns and you have no incentive or requirement for further DoS negotiations with the Taliban. NO $$$ payments, sanctions relief, or future virtue signaling media broadcast repatriations.

All the folks that (Foggy Bottom) wanted to get out, are now out.

Do not waste the crisis, prolong it! The 60,000 number can easily be expanded closer to the next election.
