Rantburg safety update: Man has VERY close call after a sharp metal disc breaks off his power tool and flies at his face, cutting through his protective shield - and stopping less than an INCH away from his eye

[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Hate when that happens...

#12  Sure, and I bet they say it as innocently as a fireman says "Picking up hose."

#10  don't push the equipment

But "Tool Pusher" is a job description.

#9  When the material being worked on seems to be grabbing the bit, reduce the amount of pressure applied or work on it from a different angle. Power tool safety 101.

#8  Softer metals want to grab the tool. Story in that somewhere...

#7  I got whacked in the belly by a thick copper plate I was drilling a hole in when the bit grabbed & jerked the plate hard enough to break the clamp holding it - it left a mark. Glad the press was not a little lower...

#6  Rule #1: Take it easy, don't push the equipment
Rule #2: Look at the plane of motion of the tool; stay out of it. If it breaks, that's where the pieces are going.

#5  I had a Northern Equipment grinding stone rapidly disassemble. Went thru a window and punched a hole in the steel roofing. Not rated for high spin rate.

#4  Agreed, badanov. You can have all the safety apparel in the world but still need to know how to safely use the tools you have or you'll still get hurt (or worse).

Rule #1 - Don't force the tool to do something it wasn't designed to do.

#3  Those cut off wheels are pretty flexible, being .040 inch thick and 4.5 inches in dia.

You really have to bend the living shit out of one to get it to break like that.

#2  To do this he had the tool point vertically up and down and the Blade Guard aimed in a way to allow it to not to protect the user as it was designed to?

#1  I get a lot of use out of Dremel tools. No doubt stuff happens fast at high RPMs. Always wear good safety glasses.
