#7  Patriot: I have been following Rantburg for many years, and I want to congratulate you; yours is the most vavid, stupid, argument I have encountered in all that time.

#6  90% of the Russians' hostility toward us is due to our interference in Ukraine & Crimea, including the foolish sanctions that have achieved nothing -- nothing except making ordinary Russians' lives more difficult md making them hate us.

Before 2014, Russian public opinion toward the US was about 55-30 favorable vs unfavorable. Ditto regarding China.

After our botched intervention and the imposition of anti-Russian sanctions, Russian public opinion shifted to 81% UNFAVORABLE toward America and 81% favorable toward China. Overnight.

What a colossally stupid policy our Ukraine adventure was and is ... all so Victoria Nuland and the neo-con crew can have a few more orgasms and Soetoro's race-baiters can create a mythical white supremacist menace.

And so that the most corrupt American political family in history can line its pockets with payola from corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs. What a disaster. Utterly foolish.

#4  Russia is simply another oriental despotism. Its relationship with the West is purely accidental.

Nonsense. If Russia today is "despotic," then so is contemporary America. We do not have greater freedom of speech, or fairer elections, or stronger rule of law in our large cities and in Washington, than Russia does. They've become more free and more orderly in the last 25 years. They're people are living longer and their white population is increasing.

We're moving in the opposite direction: our longevity and our white fertility rate -- everywhere outside maybe Utah -- are both decreasing. Our elections are a farce. Rule of law is eroding.

We're moving down. Russia's moving up. At some point we and Russia will meet in the middle.

If Russia's an "oriental despotism," then the United Socialist States is becoming an occidental despotism. At minimum we should stop bashing them and start figuring out how to draw them into our ring of nations containing China and Iran.

Sticking our nose into Ukraine (and even Crimea for fuck's sake) was yet another idiotic American own goal, one of dozens, that our incompetent foreign-policy elites have committed these last 29 years.

#3  Just tweaking The Big Guy.
These countries fear and loathe each other almost as much as they fear us. If we had even halfway aware and intelligent leaders we'd be doing everything in our power to turn them against each other -- esp Russia against China. There is no natural convergence of interest for Russia and China. They're natural rivals.

#2  Why not? Russia is simply another oriental despotism. Its relationship with the West is purely accidental.

#1  ...One can take some cold comfort in the fact that the members of this Axis have far less 'honor-among-thieves' than the last one did, and will spend a great deal of time trying to figure out how to shaft each other.
