#4 Do the US troops serve a a tripwire to deter China, or does their presence up the ante and force China to go big when they make their move? The best thing for China is to win Taiwan without fighting through territorial salami-slicing, buying up politicians, and military threats. If things do jump off, keeping the US out of the game would be a huge help. It may be that the Chinese do the math and decide that their advantage will never be greater, so let's do it now. Just like Japan back in the 1940s. Given the current Chinese focus on unrestricted war against both civilian and military targets, I'd expect a lot of damage to CONUS in order to keep us busy at home and out of the South China Sea. Hey, didn't someone test a port-destroying weapon the other day? |

#2 Spengler opined the following before this was news:Nonetheless, a war over Taiwan remains a significant risk during the next several years. If Washington stations troops on the island, as former National Security Adviser John Bolton urges, or takes other steps to establish Taiwan’s sovereignty, China probably will seize the island. |
