Los Angeles police fatally shot a 14-year-old girl in a Burlington Coat Factory while firing at a male suspect
2021-12-24
[MSN] Los Angeles police fatally shot a 14-year-old girl inside a Burlington Coat Factory dressing room on Thursday when they opened fire on a male suspect inside the North Hollywood store.

The shooting suspect was also killed in the police shooting, authorities said.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded just before noon to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

When they arrived, "officers encountered the suspect, who was in the process of assaulting another person," Officer Drake Madison told Insider. Police then opened fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man and a woman were listed as deceased, but officials did not immediately clarify which victim was the suspect.

[insider@insider.com] One victim was transported to a hospital for injuries sustained during the attack, police said. Their condition is unknown.

When LAPD officers open fire, internal inquiries, as well as an investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is triggered, according to NBC News.

Police said they plan to review surveillance footage amid an ongoing investigation.

A representative for Burlington Coat Factory did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Update from the Post Millennial at 3:35 p.m. ET, courtesy of Fred:
Responding officers went upstairs and found a man assaulting a woman. The police opened fire and killed the man. Police have not yet identified the suspect. Dominic H. Choi, an assistant chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, said at a news conference that officers found a heavy metal lock cable near the man, but no gun.

Officer Drake Madison, a spokesperson for the department said that the suspect was taken into custody and died at the scene.

Los Angeles Police chief, Michel R. Moore, said that the shooting was the "worst thing anyone can imagine." The police did not immediately release the 14-year-old girl’s name who had been in the dressing room with her mother trying on dresses for a quinceañera.

Nicholas Prange, a spokesperson with the Fire Department said that another woman was injured and taken to a trauma center.

#21  So, be honest. Which is more important. A beating was stopped or the girl gets to grow up? We like to make fun of the "he was maybe the next Einstein" thing, but maybe she would be happy in her own life. If it wasn't snuffed out. That would be enough, a happy person. The eggs / omelet crowd should volunteer to take her place, if only that was possible.

#20  I guess it's just a good thing the people who think cops should always have a blank check don't extend that to Fauxi ordering mass lethal injections for COVID.

The girl was trying on dresses for her Quinceañera.

#18   We are talking about a shoplifter here, not Ted Bundy.

Seems events were a bit more exciting than mere thievery:
"officers encountered the suspect, who was in the process of assaulting another person,"
The article mentions a bike chain or lock.

#17  Authorities said one of the bullets went through a changing room wall and struck the teenage girl.
9mm slugs designed to penetrate car doors, windshields and body armor don't slow much in cardboard walls. Check the dude's loads.

#16  ...yeah, you keep pushing the envelope on that and you're in the San Francisco league.

I had a father. One of his words of wisdom was 'Do what the cop says. You may be right, dead right'
Apparently too many out there lacked such a father.

#15  No innocent person should ever suffer from police activity. We are talking about a shoplifter here, not Ted Bundy. Short of an active shooter with a fully automatic weapon, there's no excuse for this.

#14  Tough break for the cop, who did a lot less wrong than Alec Baldwin, but failed to realize there was an occupied changing room beyond his target; at least one of the cop's victims was a righteous shooting.
Tougher break for the poor girl in the changing room.

#11  How bout one of those "national discussions" on when shop-lifters, bail-jumpers, warrant-evaders and general arrest-resisters need to be shot? None of those things are death penalty offenses. As for the ones shot while at a traffic stop, maybe one officer should boot the car while it's pulled over? Put's the person who doesn't want to be arrested on foot. As for the shoplifters, are you kidding me? Now, in the age of flash mob grab n dash?

#9  Until the 'National Security Police', solely under the direction of then current national political administration, is instituted.

Isn't the Capital Police, under the personal direction of Queen Nancy, expanding thru the rest of the country?

#5  A gun-grabber would tell you this is proof only the military should have guns.

gun-grabber doesn't know the law concerning the military -

Title 10 USC - The Militia

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

Clearly every able bodied male citizen, over 17 and under 45, not in uniform are members of the unorganized militia - ie the military.

Until the 'National Security Police', solely under the direction of then current national political administration, is instituted.

They were called Sicherheitspolizei in an earlier time and place.
