  • Imports usually cover 80 per cent of the island's needs but they were at their lowest since 2009 in May 2021

  • Specific products often disappear from the shelves completely for periods of time, as the case now with milk

  • Stores often have only two products at a given time and shoppers queue without knowing what they can buy

  • Cubans have ID cards and ration books that give them access to government-subsidized items every month
