#3  My Grandfather was a Chief Petty Office and then Warrant Officer in WWI and told me that in his recruit training her was stationed for a time on the USS Constitution, after which, because he was a radio operator (morse code) was sent to the training school about the USS Constellation. He was quite proud of having been assigned on the only two sailing ships in the Navy.
As an aside, I flew with him on his first airliner flight DC-San Diego in the mid-1970's to visit family. In making conversation since I had done Marine Corps Recruit Training at MCRD SD, I asked him if he was excited to visit San Diego for the first time. He replied he knew all about the city, and had been stationed there at North Island, in 1911.

#1  ...As an aside, Victory also took a hit from the Luftwaffe which broke her keel. A marine engineer of my acquaintance from the UK told me that she was never quite the same after that.

Sadly, the UK never continually maintained and restored Victory the way we have with Constitution. Pretty much with the exception of her drydock periods, Constitution has been a working ship - Victory was held onto more as a relic than anything else, and she was essentially derelict at several points during her career, and on one occasion actually sank at dockside. The RN knows and understands her historic value, but HMG has always been a little...erratic...in the efforts to preserve her for future generations.
